What is the Coronavirus (COVID-19) catch-up premium?

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) catch-up premium is designed to support secondary schools to ensure children catch up as a result of the coronavirus and disruption caused to their education.

For 2020-2021, the government has invested over £1 billion in funding to support children. The allocation of funding is calculated on a per pupil basis, providing each mainstream school with a total of £80 for each pupil in years 7 through to 11. Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the curriculum expectations in the actions for schools during the coronavirus outbreak guidance.

10 Pupil Premium students in Year 11 to receive 1:1 tuition through MyTutor in Maths

Summer assessments and exams were used to identify students with specific gaps who struggled. Maths  was the only GCSE subject  where PP students achieved a negative Subject Progress Index in 2019.

£350 through NTP

All Pupil Premium students in Year 11 to be offered 3:1 tuition through NTP in either Maths/English Language

Year 11 team and HODs from Maths and English to identify further students to support who require additional help due to impact of school partial closure

Total number of students: 62

Achieving a strong pass in both subjects is key in ensuring students are able to access their next chosen pathway

£12,000 through NTP

Students within NTP who are at greatest risk of not achieving standard/strong pass at GCSE to access tuition in both English Language and Maths through Manning’s tutors.

Additional resources to support with the smooth running of NTP programme

Supervision of sessions

Equipment (headphones particularly important due to online tuition.)

In order for students to engage with the programme they must have access to all necessary equipment. Supervision of tuition will ensure students are supported with any difficulties that online platforms may cause. 


NGRT Reading Tests for Key Stage Three

 Additional reading assessment resources will allow us to measure student attainment and identify which students require additional intervention and support


36 students from Year 10 identified to access 4 week programme using Manning’s tutors in summer term due to PPE 1 results

School plans to use NTP in 2021/2022. Students in Year 10 will have the opportunity to trial online tuition before summer and gain confidence before Year 11.


Annual subscription of digital theatre +

Students unable to attend theatre due to lockdown. Platform allows the school to offer opportunities for students to watch musicals and plays.



Additional strategies to support:

  • Student Services: Students emotional needs have increased due to the pandemic and isolation of lockdown. Considering additional resources to support students’ emotional needs and general well-being through counselling, mentoring

Year 12 subject mentors: Year 12 students to support students in KS4 through mentoring. Sixth form students used to support students in KS3 at homework club.
